Cologne Honorary Theatre Award 2020
for Gerda König

The jury of THE COLOGNE DANCE AND THEATRE AWARD recognises Gerda König, ‘an artist who through her incomparable work – continuously, energetically and with ever-new ideas and inspirations – has promoted and advanced national and international interactions among artists with and without disabilities for many years’.

After receiving a degree in psychology, in 1991 Gerda König embarked upon an extensive confrontation with dance and in 1995 went on to found DIN A 13 tanzcompany, one of just a handful of dance ensembles internationally the membership of which consists of dancers with and without physical impairments. Since then, they have enriched the world of dance with new aesthetic categories that continuously challenge and call into question the commonplace viewing habits in contemporary dance.

From the very beginning Gerda König has worked as artistic director and choreographer for the ensemble. In cooperation with choreographer Gitta Roser, she has staged 33 productions, 25 of them full-length performances at international dance festivals in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. for her production ‘sex I.D’, in 2007 Gerda König received the Cologne Dance and Theatre Award, a distinction for which she was nominated twice more. DIN A 13 is celebrating its 25-year jubilee this year.
