4 sterile tiled rooms, 4 dancers, 8 cameras, countless people.
This is the starting point for the new digital Live production by the dance company DIN A 13 tanzcompany.
We all find ourselves in the moment of events, of occasions.
Connections are created through walls – and confront the present with the past.
2020 marks the 45th anniversary of the end of the Francoist dictatorship in Spain and the 75th anniversary of the end of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany. In cooperation with her Spanish colleague Jordi Cortés Molina and video artist Jürgen Salzmann, choreographer Gerda König refers to the traumas of their two nations, which, in a very concrete sense, arose in camps and prisons strictly hidden away, the “cellars of society”.
People were persecuted, imprisoned and tortured under both regimes. Under National Socialism, concentration camps, but also judicial detention facilities and execution sites, were places of suffering. In Francoist Spain, the cellars of the secret police are symbols of the atrocities. The historical sites of these crimes still remind us of these deeds today. An examination of these brings important events to the surface as a reminder and is part of a process of coming to terms with the past, which, especially in Spain, has made very slow progress so far. Many of the victims of torture, violence and imprisonment in both countries were left with a disability.
The treatment of the theme “cellar” by a mixed-abled company and its example of various special characteristics underlines the idea of spaces beyond the norm in an explosive way.
The last instalment in the ‘Cellar and secrets’ trilogy deals with the atrocities committed in the basement torture chambers of the Spanish fascist and German National Socialist dictatorships.
